Spring Childcare Menu

Spring is here. Hurray!  We are all spending much more time outside and our
bodies are screaming for fresh spring foods to nourish us and to give us that burst
of
natural food-contained vitamins we need after a long winter.





















This menu is set up so as to use the daily grains specified by Rudolph Steiner and
widely used in Waldorf kindergartens and homes the world over. We have also
included many recipes that are easily doubled or tripled so that you can serve
homemade wholesome foods every day without having to spend all day in the
kitchen. You are busy enough and these menus are designed to make it easier on
you. Many of the grains and porridges can easily be frozen as well so you won’t
have
to soak and cook them each day.

These recipes also invite story telling, either while preparing, serving or at the
table. Talk about how strawberries grow and have their “seeds” on the outside.
Talk about how the chickens started laying more eggs now that there is more
sunlight and how the cows give us plenty of milk again now that their calves have
been born.

The Spring Menu is a full week of recipes that are meant to be rotated throughout
the season.  This is done to create a predictable rhythm to mealtime in the home
that the children and caregiver can depend upon each day, warming the child both
spiritually and physically throughout the season.  

Each day offers a recipe for breakfast, two snacks and lunch.  Keep in mind that
some of these foods do require a good amount of cooking and baking time - a
process that the children should be involved in each day.  Many of the meals are
easily frozen, however, for those of you who wish to cook in bulk ahead of time
for convenience.

Breakfast:  Almond Pancakes
Snack 1:  Rice with 'Sprinkles'
Lunch:  Spring Soup
Snack 2:  Ants on a Log

Tuesday - Oats, Red
Breakfast:  Strawberry Smoothie
Snack 1:  Oatie Seed Bars
Lunch:  Spring-time Veggie Sandwiches
Snack 2:  Swedish Cream

Wednesday - Millet, Yellow
Breakfast:  Grits Breakfast Casserole
Snack 1:  Millet Pudding
Lunch:  Egg Salad
Snack 2:  Date Balls

Thursday - Barley, Orange
Breakfast:  French Toast Casserole
Snack 1:  Walnut Hummus
Lunch:  Fiesta Cheese Barley
Snack 2:  Berry Popcorn

Friday - Rye, Green
Breakfast:  Homemade Cereal
Snack 1:  Raisin Rye Bread
Lunch:  Spring Pizza
Snack 2:  Berry Salad with Cinnamon Crisps
