Day Three of Clean Eating and a Snowy Spring Giveaway!

Ok I’m on Day 3 of “clean eating” and I feel like I’ve eaten too much. Nothing I ate was processed which is great and no sugar at all but I did have potatoes tonight (my favorite – red potatoes with olive oil). They are clean but not low-carb. I actually think I’ve gained about 2 lbs since starting this. In either case, at least my food is pure and healthy.
At dinner the girls were asking me about a woman we know who was a child that survived the holocaust. She still has the numbers on her arm. I do not know her entire story but I do know that the story should never be forgotten. The girls are very curious and all three of them are at different ages so I have to be careful how I share things. We decided to read Anne Frank’s Diary together a little every night and talk about it. As we read tonight, it amazed me to realize that this all happened when my own grandmother was nearly 30 years old and living her life here in America with no worries. Anne mentioned how her two uncles fled to North America because they were Jewish and the rules were getting so intense. My grandmother met my grandfather in New York and he also came here from Germany. We do not know the exact reasons why but I believe it was because he wanted to get away from the ugliness of what was happening over there.
Today is the first day of Spring and it did not feel like it one bit. My girls got dismissed early from school because of a snowstorm on its way. In order to try to bring Spring indoors, we made some new wool barrettes for the Little Acorn Learning Etsy Shop. I haven’t added any to the shop yet as I hope to make a bunch first. They are 100% wool plant dyed felt and very sweet.

Then we enjoyed our first Spring day by putting on two layers of clothing, our snowpants, hats, gloves and boots and jumping around in the snowstorm!  Funny isn’t it?

I promised something fun and free today so here it goes:
To celebrate the very first day of Spring, I will be giving away 5 FREE Spring Festival E-Books randomly!

  1. I live in Kyle South Dakota, and the weather is beautiful, still a little chilly at nights but still it is Spring, I've seen the tulips budding already.

  4. I've done 1 through 3 so here's #4: I spent the first day of spring learning about the neurobiology of play in Albany, NY. Some light snow and it won't last long!

  7. Did 1-3. 4. We live in Oregon. Our first day of Spring was rainy, but I still went and planted some Blueberry bushes ๐Ÿ™‚ We had a bit of sun now and then peaking through the clouds. I love that the buds are starting to bloom and the daffodils are out. My friend has this gorgeous flowering quince in his front yard and all the humming birds were out buzzing around it. It was lovely. My email is websurfergirl19 AT hotmail DOT com if I win. Thanks!

  10. We just moved from the Midwest to Southern California, so spring is quite different here. I'd love ideas for rituals/celebrations where the weather is more constant.

  16. Did #1-3 ๐Ÿ™‚ We're in Alaska where we get a lot of rain. We didn't have much snow this Winter and what little we had has melted. Can still see snow on the mountains which is lovely. We had beautiful rare sunny first day of Spring. Hope it keeps up!

  19. My 7 yr old son and I live in Utah. We have had a very mild winter and it's already up to the mid-60s during the day though it goes done to the mid-30s at night. Last week my son was out of school half with a terrible cough and now I'm developing it so we are being pretty lazy and recuperating with gentle walks to the park with our dog, noticing the buds on all the trees and bushes as they emerge.

  25. We have done 1-3 quite some time ago. As for the First Day of Spring, it was quite warm and humid. The boys and I did a small road trip with GrandDude to take him to the National Naval Aviation Museum. But we enjoyed the cooler temps outside around dinner time as we played with this really fun toy propeller. Mommy here got it caught in a tree and almost lost it to the roof…twice.

  28. We enjoyed a morning outdoors! The snow is melting here in northern michigan though it is kind of a rarity for the first of spring here as we usually have much more! We threw open the windows and let the spring in, repotted some plants, and started to prepare for our seedlings! My 3 year old and I also decided that we need to begin making a kite!

  30. Thanks for doing this giveaway! We are in metro Atlanta, Georgia and I am a homeschooling mama to two sweet little boys. Spring had already "sprung" here a few days ago, and it's been glorious… today was rainy, overcast and cool again, but at least that won't last! ๐Ÿ™‚

  33. sunshine, rain, snow, rain, sunshine, more snow, and sun! Trying to protect the daffodils as they are attempting to bloom during this turbulently muddy time, when the boys believe they are responsible for emptying the gutter bucket!

  42. I did #1-3! We just enjoyed a beautiful, warm 70 degrees, breezy day with clear blue skies in sunny San Diego :). It's nice and cool compared with temps in the 90s we had last week.

  45. I teach a Nature and Art Based Kindergarten in Saskatchewan, Canada. We've had unusually warm weather for the last few months, and were enjoying lots of puddles and mud right up until today – the first day of Spring – we got a bunch more snow. My class and I have been celebrating diversity – learning about Rainbows, and we decided to paint the snow. I diluted some tempra paint in squirt bottles, and we painted the snow all around our school yard, then some boulders, as well. When we came inside, I had set up a story called "The Rainbow and the Antelope" to share a creation myth introducing seeds (and how to plant them) – we planted popcorn to start in our indoor garden.

  48. I have done steps 1 through 3 (already had liked on Facebook and get the newsletter).
Today in Northern Virginia we had snow in the morning and rain all day. I can remember other years in tank tops. The snowdrops are blooming, crocus and daffodil shoots are up and visible now that this winter's snow has finally receded.

  51. We have just started going on our daily evening walks along the Illinois river again and I must say this has become the favorite time of the day for me lately after having been stuck inside for so long. Tulips, snowdrops, robins – here we come! Anna Marie, Emma Elise, Bob and Katja from Spring Valley, IL

  59. I am a homeschooling mama of two adventurous little boys! We live in the Pacific Northwest in beautiful Coeur D'alene Idaho. We noticed today the first little blooms of flowers in our backyard. The boys have been busy building our gnomes little homes out of bark and pinecones. We are all ready for our little woodsy friends to come out and play!
