Snowflake Match Game

This activity is included in both our Winter Festivals Book and our new First Grade Curriculum currently in development. It’s a wonderful way to use up some of those beautiful watercolor paintings you’ve created with the children!

They say no two snowflakes are alike but in this case that’s not true! Have the children help you create a snowflake matching game out of old watercolor painting and hand cut paper snowflakes. The game can be used face up or turned over as a pattern memory game. To add in some more mathematical practice, write an equation and an answer on each match.

Supplies Needed:

Colored Cardstock or Old Watercolor Paintings

White Paper for Snowflakes

Glue

Pencil

Ruler

The first thing you will need to do is figure out how many cards you are able to make out of your watercolor paintings and what size you want them to be. Use a pencil and a ruler to make marks on your paper so you know where to cut. This is a good opportunity for children to continue to practice cutting and handling scisssors properly.

After you have the correct number of cards planned out, work with the children to cut out paper snowflakes that will fit on your cards. To get two of the same snowflakes, simply use two sheets of your white paper folded together before you cut.

Here is a sweet verse to share as you work:

Snowflake, snowflake,

(flutter snowflakes or hand)

Little snowflake,

Falling from the sky

(move snowflake down)

Snowflake, snowflake,

(flutter snowflakes or hand)

Little snowflake,

Falling on my nose.

(point to nose or bring snowflake to touch it)

Snowflake, snowflake,

(flutter snowflakes or hand)

Little snowflake,

Falling on my head.

(point to head or touch snowflake)

Snowflake, snowflake

(flutter snowflakes or hand)

Little snowflake,

Falling on my toes.

(touch hands or snowflake to toes)

Next, have the children use glue to adhere the snowflakes to each card and let dry. These cards can also be laminated for added durability before playing.
